What is a prostate?
The prostate is located in the bladder neck and hugs the urethra. Its function is to produce a liquid that protects the sperm cells. In other words, the prostate produces part of the seminal fluid essential for male fertility.
What is an enlarged prostate?
An enlarged prostate (benign enlargement of the prostate, in English: Benign Hypertrophy Prostate) is a condition in which the prostate gland (prostate) grows into the urethral cavity (the tube that carries urine from the bladder).
After a while, the enlarged prostate may cause a blockage in the outlet of the bladder. However - as the name of the diagnosis suggests - it is a non-cancerous tumor.
Every man will suffer from prostate-related symptoms at some point in his life. At the age of 50, about 30% of men will suffer from a benign enlargement of the prostate, at the age of 70 - about 60%, and at the age of 90 - almost all men will suffer from an enlarged prostate.
What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate?
The symptoms can be divided into two main groups:
• Complaints related to the obstruction of the outlet of the bladder: difficulty urinating, a weak and fragmented stream of urine to the point of complete urinary retention, a feeling of not emptying, a delay at the beginning of urination (time elapses between the first attempt to urinate and its actual discharge) and incomplete emptying (after At the end of urination, there are still a few drops left in the bladder that you can't get out).
• Irritative complaints - complaints about urinating often and with great urgency (due to the inability to hold back even for a short time) and complaints about nocturia (the need to get up at night to urinate - sometimes even several times in one night).
Changes in the bladder muscle are the source of these complaints. In many cases, these changes are secondary effects of blocking the bladder's outlet due to the enlarged prostate.
